Current Transformer And Potential Transformer

01. The CT is used to measure the current so it is called a current transformer whereas the PT is used to measure voltage so it is called a potential transformer.

02. In the CT, the primary winding is connected in series of the load whereas, in the PT, the primary winding is connected in parallel.

03. In the case of the CT, the current is stepped down whereas, in the PT, the voltage is stepped down.

04. In the current transformer, the primary winding turn is less than the secondary winding whereas, in the PT, the primary winding turn is more than the secondary winding.

05. The bar-type current transformer will not have a primary winding. In the case of a PT, the primary winding is a must.

06. The voltage across the primary winding will be low in the case of the CT whereas, in the case of the potential transformer, the full input voltage will come across the primary winding.

07. In the case of the current transformer, the output can not be kept open. However, the output of a winding may be kept open in rare cases. Whereas in the potential transformer, the output can be kept open.

08. In the case of the current transformer, a high resistance load is not safe but low resistance load is safe whereas in the potential transformer, high resistance load is safe but low resistance load is not safe.

09. In the case of the current transformer, the impedance of the transformer is not so important whereas, in the case of a PT, the impedance of the transformer is more important.

10. In the case of the current transformer, it has only one output whereas in the PT many outputs may be provided.

11. The CT is designed for the wide variation of current at input whereas the PT is designed for limited variation in the input voltage.

Well, guys, these are some main differences between the current transformer and the potential transformer. Thank you for reading the article.
