Why Carbon Brush Is Used In Motor, Why Not Copper Brush

Hello guys, welcome back to my blog. In this article, I will discuss why carbon brush is used in motor, what happens if we use a copper brush instead of a carbon brush, the advantages of using carbon brush, etc. Everything I will try to explain in a simple way.

We all know that the carbon brush is used to collect or supply current from moving parts to the nonmoving part. The carbon brushes are usually used in auto-transformer, dc motors, universal motor, generators, etc. Well, now the question is that why carbon brush is only used always. There are many reasons so that the carbon brush is the best material to use for collecting current.

The cost of carbon brush used in motor or generator varies from 85 to 1000 rupees based on the type or size of the motor.

Why Carbon Brush Is Used?

The reasons to use carbon material as the brush are:

01. Soft Material – The carbon brush which is used in machines is not solid like copper, if we use the copper brush then the copper brush will damage to a commutator (brush is always placed above the commutator) so if we use carbon brush it will not damage the commutator because it is the soft element. If you get a chance to see carbon brush in motor then just touch and see the carbon brush.

02. Self-Lubrication – Self-lubrication means, for example, you have a cycle to make cycle riding smooth you will put some oil in the cycle chain. Well, for the carbon brush you don’t need to put any kind of oil because it has self-lubrication property.

03. Negative Temperature Co-efficient Of Resistance – If temperature increases in the motor then the resistance of carbon brush will decreases by which more current is collected or supplied, but in case of a copper brush it is opposite.

04. Melting Point – The melting point of carbon brush is very high nearly 3500 degrees C. If any arcing or sparking takes place in motor or generator then the carbon brush will not metal so easily. Whereas the melting point of copper is low as compared to carbon.

05. Shape – The carbon brush is soft so it can easily take the surface shape of the commutator whereas if we use a copper brush then it will not take the surface shape of the commutator because it is harder metal.

Guys these are the reasons why carbon brush is always used in motor, generator, auto-transformer, etc. I hope this article may help you all a lot.
