Applications of Embedded Systems

The term “embedded system” refers to a system that combines computer hardware and software. This system, like any other electronic system, requires a hardware platform, which is comprised of a microprocessor or microcontroller.

The hardware of an embedded system contains components such as the user interface, input/output interfaces, display, and memory, among others. A power supply, CPU, memory, timers, serial communication ports, and system application-specific circuits are all part of an embedded system.

Embedded system software is written in a high-level language and then compiled to perform a specified task in the hardware’s non-volatile memory. Embedded system software is created with three constraints in mind.

They are system memory availability and processor speed. When the system runs indefinitely, the power dissipation for activities like run, halt, and wake up must be limited.

Here are the Top 15 Applications of Embedded Systems:

  1. Central heating systems
  2. GPS systems
  3. Fitness trackers
  4. Medical devices
  5. Automotive systems
  6. Transit and fare collection
  7. ATMs
  8. Factory robots
  9. Electric vehicle charging stations
  10. Interactive kiosks
  11. Defense and Aerospace
  12. Banking Sector
  13. Signal Systems
  14. Automobiles Sector
  15. Home Appliances

01. Central Heating Systems

In a furnace room, central heating systems transform chemical energy into thermal energy and then transfer that energy into heat, which is then distributed throughout a building. The thermostat controls, which are achieved by an embedded system, are critical for these systems to change the temperature.

02. GPS Systems

The GPS is a navigation system that synchronizes data about location, time, and velocity using satellites and receivers. To make the use of a global positioning system easier, the receiver or device that receives the data has an integrated embedded system. People can simply find their present location and destination thanks to the incorporated GPS gadgets.

03. Fitness Trackers

Wearable fitness trackers can monitor your health and track activities such as sleeping, running, and walking. These gadgets use embedded technologies to collect data on your heart rate, body temperature, and several steps, which are then communicated to servers over a wide area network (WAN) such as LTE or GPRS.

04. Medical Devices

Embedded systems have been used in medical equipment at healthcare institutions for a long time. Embedded systems are being used in a new class of medical gadgets to assist treat patients who require ongoing monitoring and treatment at home.

05. Automotive Systems

Automobile embedded systems are created and installed to improve vehicle safety. The number of traffic fatalities has decreased in recent years as a result of car safety systems. Automobile manufacturers are going above and beyond to equip cars with advanced technology systems and sensors, which would be impossible without embedded systems.

06. Transit and Fare Collection

AFC (Automated Fare Collection) is a fare collection system that allows users to pay for their tickets using ticket vending machines or internet services. Coins and tokens were originally used in these systems, but they have since been replaced with magnetic stripe cards or smart cards.

Basic station equipment that includes a ticket vending machine, automatic gate machine, and ticket checking machine is known as an AFC. These are embedded systems that allow for speedier transactions, smoother operations, and more efficient money collecting.

07. ATMs

An automated teller machine (ATM) is a computerized banking machine that communicates across a network with a host bank computer. The ATM’s embedded system shows transaction data and processes inputs from the ATM keyboard, while the bank computer verifies all data submitted by users and stores all transactions.

08. Factory Robots

Factory robots are built to do high-precision jobs in hazardous environments. They have a built-in embedded system that connects several subsystems. Robots use actuators, sensors, and software to detect the surroundings and safely produce the desired output in normal mechanical work.

09. Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Charging stations for electric vehicles are equipped with charging points or units that provide electric power to connected automobiles. The charging station contains an embedded system that processes graphics displays, reports device faults, and alerts technicians when maintenance is required.

10. Interactive Kiosks

The processing for linked, self-service kiosk machines is handled by an embedded system, which delivers an interactive consumer experience. These systems can be built to work in remote and outdoor locations, delivering information and services even in the harshest weather. They also provide scalable I/O options for workload consolidation and can eliminate downtime for real-time applications.

11. Banking Sector

Embedded systems are also used in the banking sector for security purposes in several domains.

12. Defense and Aerospace

Missile Guidance Systems, Systems for navigation and guidance, GPS, Space Exploration (Rovers) use the embedded systems.

13. Signal Systems

Signaling systems use embedded technology, which ensures your safety during your journey.

14. Automobiles Sector

Nowadays, modern cars have a variety of embedded systems that perform a variety of activities based on their uses in the vehicle.

15. Home Appliances

Embedded systems are also employed in a variety of household appliances that you use daily and on which you are completely reliant.

To summarise, Embedded systems and their applications are the focus of this article. We all know that these systems, regardless of circuit complexity, are really fantastic systems that play a critical function in many devices, equipment, industrial control systems, industrial instrumentation, and home appliances.

I hope this article ” Applications of Embedded Systems ” may help you all a lot. Thank you for reading.
