Ceiling Fan Working

Nowadays, a Ceiling fan is used in many places such as a house, shops, etc. The ceiling fan is one of the greatest inventions. Before the electric ceiling fan, the belt-driven ceiling fan was used. A person can live without AC (air-conditioner) but can’t live without a ceiling fan.

What Is A Ceiling Fan?

The Ceiling fan is a Capacitor Start Induction Motor that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. It is a single-phase induction motor. Why the fan is called a ceiling fan? well, it is because the fan is fixed to the roof so it is called a ceiling fan.

Working Of Ceiling Fan

Working Of Ceiling Fan

The Ceiling Fan has two main parts one is the stator and another one is the rotor. We all know that the single-phase induction motor is not self-starting, to make the motor self-starting the starting winding and the capacitor is used as you can see in figures. The stator of the motor consists of two windings one is starting winding and another one is running winding. The capacitor is connected in series with the starting winding.

Suppose, just think if we use the ceiling fan with only one winding, without starting winding and without a capacitor, then think will fan rotates? Well, when we give a single-phase supply, the alternating flux will produce due to which the torque will be equal to zero and the fan will not rotate. The flux produced will be equal in magnitude but alternating. If you rotate the fan by hand at either side, then the fan will start to rotate on that side only.

To rotate the motor, a rotating flux is required this can be achieved by adding one more winding called starting winding, and also a capacitor is required for phase shift which is connected in series with the starting winding.

Why is the Capacitor used in the Ceiling Fan?

Just imagine, if we use a ceiling fan without a capacitor then the two winding i.e., starting and running winding will be connected in parallel. When we give supply to the fan, the fluxes produced by both winding will be in phase and the motor will not rotate, so to do some phase shifting, the capacitor is connected in series with the starting winding. By connecting the capacitor, the phase leads by 90 degrees and the fan will start to rotate. Well, guys, the capacitor is used to do the phase shift in the ceiling fan. The cost of the fan capacitor is 40 rupees.

Price Or Cost Of The Ceiling Fan?

The price of the ceiling fan is around 500 rupees to 3000 rupees. Nowadays, the BLDC ceiling fan has come, the cost of the BLDC ceiling fan is less compared to the induction motor ceiling fan.

Guys, this was the short information about the ceiling fan. I hope this article may help you all a lot. Thank you for reading.
