Future Scope of Battery Management Engineers

The work of battery management engineers is to develop a BMS that will maintain/manage the lithium-ion batteries in the electric vehicle. The demand for electric vehicles is increasing day by day, and lithium-ion cells are utilized to power the electric vehicle motor. Soon in 2030, all petrol and diesel engine vehicles will disappear, and people will start using electric vehicles because it has lots of advantages compared to diesel and petrol engines such as no pollution, low noise, no fuel consumption, etc. And also the demand for lithium batteries will increase. But to maintain a lithium-ion battery pack in EV, battery management engineers are required to design proper BMS.

As we already discussed, the battery pack is utilized to power the motor but while the EV is in running condition we have to check and monitor the battery pack whether it is charged efficiently or not, if any fault occurs the battery pack must be isolated, temperature control, and many factors we have to monitor. So, BMS engineers will design a system for this (i,e., BMS) to maintain/manage the pack in EV.

The battery management engineers’ main work is to develop BMS that will manage the battery pack in good condition. BMS or Battery Management System plays a very important role in electric vehicles. To monitor and maintain the battery pack for proper usage, a BMS is needed. The main functions of BMS are

  • Cell balancing: equalizing the Soc and voltage of each cell
  • Protecting the battery pack from overcurrent, overvoltage, & under-voltage conditions
  • Monitoring the temperature, & isolating the BMS if the temperature exceeds
  • Monitoring current, voltage, SoC (state of charge), SoH (state of health)
  • Efficient charging & discharging

The battery management system board is used to protect the battery from overcharge, overvoltage, under-voltage, temperature variation, and unbalanced conditions, and also monitor the state of charge of a battery, state of health, etc.

As the electric vehicle demand is increasing the battery management engineer’s demand also increases. Many engineering colleges still do not have a battery management system subject but soon they will offer it.

Salary for battery management engineers

The average salary of battery management engineers varies from 25,000 to 45,000 rupees per month in India. The salary is quite good, but it will increase as the year passes.

Companies for battery management engineers

The companies which are hiring battery management engineers are:

  • 01. Bosch Engineering and Business
  • 02. Ola Electric Mobility
  • 03. Mercedes Benz
  • 04. Techsist Solution
  • 05. EASI LLC
  • 06. Tesla
  • 07. Tata
  • 08. Hero
  • 09. Mahindra Electric

Many other companies are hiring battery management engineers.

Conclusion:

I can say that BMS engineers’ demand will be high if electric vehicles will come into the market. Currently, in the BMS field, much research is going on different algorithms for state estimation, cell balancing, thermal management, fault management, etc.

I hope this article may help you all a lot. Thank you for reading this article.
