How Electric Train Gets An Electric Supply

Nowadays, electric traction is most widely used in all countries because electric traction has many advantages compared to diesel engine trains such as reduce pollution, reduce noise, etc. The supply to the electric traction can be given mainly in two ways: one is by overhead lines using a pantograph and another way is the 3rd rail system.

In the overhead method, the electric traction gets supply from overhead lines. The traction gets phase supply from the overhead lines and neutral or return path from the wheels of electric traction. The phase supply from up(overhead lines) and neutral from down(wheels). The capacity of overhead lines is 25KV.

The phase supply is connected to the train by pantograph. The pantograph is a current collector that connects the overhead lines to the train to provide supply.

In the 3rd rail system, the electric traction will get supply from the 3rd rail. The extra rail will be placed beside the rail which carries current to provide supply to the train. The electric traction collects the current from the 3rd rail. The capacity of the 3rd rail is 750 volts dc.

These are the two ways of how electric traction gets an electric supply. One is from the overhead lines and another one is from the 3rd rail system.

I hope this article may help you all a lot. Thank you for reading. I think how you are clear with how electric train gets an electric supply.
