New Delhi: Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy announced on Monday that Bengaluru will soon house the third unit of the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT-III).
In his statement, the minister emphasized that Bengaluru’s vast pool of skilled professionals and its strong industrial ecosystem make it a perfect location for establishing the new ICAT unit. This initiative is part of a broader vision to transform Bengaluru into a global hub for advanced automotive technologies, with a particular focus on electric vehicles (EVs) and emerging mobility solutions.

“Bengaluru has been at the forefront of India’s technological innovation, serving as a nucleus for progress in multiple domains. By setting up ICAT Centre-III in Bengaluru, we aim to accelerate advancements in cutting-edge areas such as electric vehicles, autonomous driving technologies, and next-generation automotive solutions. This initiative will not only strengthen India’s automotive sector but also foster innovation in related industries, including defense, railways, and sustainable technologies,” Kumaraswamy said in his statement.
The announcement came after the minister’s visit to the two existing ICAT facilities in Manesar, near Gurugram. During the visit, he expressed his satisfaction with the functioning of these centers and praised their role in supporting industry growth.
The International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) is known for its comprehensive range of services offered to both automotive and non-automotive industries. These services include expertise in powertrain development, testing for noise vibration and harshness (NVH), component evaluation, fatigue analysis, photometry, tire and wheel testing, as well as passive safety system assessments. The new Bengaluru-based unit is expected to build on these capabilities, driving forward the development of advanced technologies and strengthening India’s position in the global automotive industry.
